Older People Rehabilitation
Old age brings many challenges including problems with falls, balance, reduced strength and mobility; these all invariably having a knock on effect on an individual’s ability to participate in activities of daily living or their favourite social past-times.
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines recommend multi-factorial risk assessment and multi-factorial interventions that incorporate strength and balance training and specialist advice regarding falls prevention and home adjustments.
At Mindbody Physio we are well-placed to tailor a treatment programme to your individual needs and will happily visit you at home to assess your specific environmental challenges.
There is no greater joy than seeing our clients make huge improvements in their functional abilities and subsequently in their quality of life.
Neurological Rehabilitation
Neurological conditions present in many different forms but often share in common their impact on muscle strength, muscle tone, sensation, coordination, flexibility and balance which result in reduced functional abilities such as walking and performing activities of daily living. All of the above can benefit from specialist Physiotherapy assessment and treatment.
As a result of ‘neuroplasticity’ which is the brain’s ability to ‘relearn’ certain skills, varying degrees of recovery can be made from conditions such as Stroke or Acquired Brain injury. In order to optimise on neuroplastic changes that occur after a Stroke or Brain injury, intensive physiotherapy intervention is recommended during the first three months after the intial onset.
At Mindbody Physio it is our greatest ambition to see our clients realise their potential following a Stroke or Brain injury through regular physiotherapeutic input following discharge from hospital.
In other conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s Disease, Physiotherapy can help to maintain your current level of mobility and function for longer making a significant difference to your quality of life.
Cognitive Functional Therapy
Cognitive Functional Therapy is an evidence based approach to managing chronic (long-term) backpain. At Mindbody Physio we incorporate it into our assessment and management of any chronic pain condition and more complex conditions such as fibromyalgia. This approach addresses multiple factors that are known to affect pain including health beliefs, stress, sleep and lifestyle factors. It is very similar to another successful evidence-based approach called ‘Pain reprocessing theory’. Both look to address the ‘sensitised neural circuits’ of the brain that are responsible for causing pain long beyond an injury or structural damage have healed.
Chronic pain is defined as any pain that persists beyond 3 months of an original injury and it is fast becoming an epidemic in western society. 34% of adults in England are thought to suffer from chronic pain which negatively impacts on their quality of life and ability to keep active.
At Mindbody Physio we are passionate about using the latest research and cutting edge approaches to tackle chronic pain acknowledging that traditional physiotherapeutic techniques haven’t always been enough. These approaches combine gentle movement with education and mindfulness to re-educate the brain’s sensitised pain signals bringing about life-changing relief.
Children’s Physiotherapy
Optimising our children’s health and physical development is something that matters to any parent or carer.
At Mindbody Physio we are here to support your child to meet their full potential whether that be through complementing work that is already being done with your NHS paediatric care team to address developmental delay or in assessing a musculoskeletal problem secondary to growth spurts. Whatever your concern, please get in touch to discuss whether physiotherapy could help them.
Remedial massage
Remedial massage is often incorporated into treatment when relevant to address areas of persistent muscle tightness and in the presence of myofascial trigger points or muscle knots.
Myofascial trigger points are areas of tenderness or knots in a muscle belly with corresponding tightness along the length of the muscle. They give rise to local pain and sometimes refer pain to other locations including the head which is experienced as a headache.
Massage may also be used to help calm the nervous system of individuals who are experiencing pain as a result of central sensitisation or neuroplastic pain.
Home visits
Home visits are particularly useful for anyone who currently struggles to leave their home perhaps due to recent surgery or a deterioration in mobility.
Often rehabilitation can be more meaningful in the home environment, especially if goals involve being able to climb the stairs or get out of that particularly low but favourite chair! For somebody who is having falls regularly, it can be helpful for the physiotherapist to assess the environment for any trip hazards or to observe those particularly taxing tasks which can’t be reproduced in a clinical setting.
Home visits can be carried out anywhere within a 15 minute drive from The Well Health Centre at no extra cost. For visits further afield an additional fee to cover travel time & mileage costs can be discussed. Preferably an initial consultation would be carried out at The Well first but we acknowledge that even this would be difficult for everyone. Please get in touch via email or phone if you would like to discuss this further.
